Introducing the Mambi--
A Krewe 100 Years in the Making
The Mambi (mom-BEE) were peasant rebels who fought for Cuban independence from Spain in the late 19th century. These freedom fighters, who often went into battle with only a machete or an old rifle, used guerilla tactics against superior Spanish forces. They were winning the war before Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders set sail from Havana in the summer of 1898.
Their Cigars
Weren't the Only Things Smoking
Inspired by the ideals of José Martí and the indomitable fighting spirit of General Antonio Maceo--the greatest Mambi of them all--many Cuban, Italian, and American volunteers from Ybor City and West Tampa joined the Mambi in their struggle for Cuban independence.
The cigar workers of Tampa Bay were so active in their support of the Cuban independence movement that one Spanish general called Tampa "the very heart of the American conspiracy."
The new Mambi krewe was formed to honor and perpetuate the memory of these courageous rebels who fought for Cuba's freedom.

The Face of the Cuban Club
is Changing
The Cuban Club was organized in 1899 for the "mutual benefit and enjoyment of its members, for charitable purposes, and for the dissemination of knowledge among all classes of people." These goals have not changed, but the Cuban Club has.
Through a number of initiatives, El Círculo Cubano de Tampa is being revitalized and has become reborn with new faces and a new mission: To preserve and commemorate the Latin heritage and the history of all the peoples of Tampa Bay. More importantly, we're attracting new members--men and women of all races, nationalities, ethnic origins, and age groups--who wish to help us in this endeavor.
If you're interested in being a part of the new Cuban Club, join us now, and the next new face of the Cuban Club will be yours.

The Mambi also host a yearly golf tournament and a number of other events, including dances, happy hours, and our traditional Mothers' Day Picnic.
